a sonnet

last summer
when you called
tellin me y’all
were having a girl
i struggled, but
managed to climb
up the highest shelf
in my Virginia kitchen
lifted my daddy’s
last bottle of bourbon
and late into the night
let Al Green explain
to me that loving a man
means letting him go
